Activities

South Devon is full of great things to do. We've lived here all our lives and we're still not bored! Whether its an action packed adventure holiday you're after or just lazy days on the beach listening to the sea with the prospect of a foot massage in the evening followed by supper of fresh local foods - there really is something for everyone. Here are some suggestions to help you plan your holiday, but we do advise making bookings in advance to avoid disappointment!

Walking - If you like walking you've come to the right place - there are enough walks round here to last a lifetime! Coastal walks are our favourites but walks on Dartmoor also give you a completely different outlook. Children and dogs are in heaven here, either on the vast expanses of sand at Mothecombe, on the coast path or on the wide open spaces of Dartmoor.

Cycling - Some of the rides on Dartmoor are hard to beat. We can offer advice on the best routes as they are mostly tried and tested! There is room for you to store your own bikes here or you can organise bike hire in advance by contacting 'Alltrax' (01752 863553), Plymouth Cycle Scene (01752 257701) or Battery Cycle Works (01752 665553).

Fishing - Alternatively, if you're keen on fishing Nick Oatway has several small suitable boats for hire and will also organise a day trip fishing on his larger boat. He operates from the River Erme (Mothecombe Beach) and can be contacted on 01548 810249. If you want to organise some river fishing locally or buy some bait and supplies, contact the Devon Angling Centre on 01548 580888. If you like the fish but not the fishing, Plymouth fish market is a must. Go there early and get this morning's catch. Moby Nicks is situated right on Fish Quay in Plymouth (01752 266610) and is one of Rick Stein's Food Heroes!

Boat trips - In Summer, you can also take great trips up the Tamar from the Barbican, in Plymouth of the foot ferry at Cremyll (tel. 01752 822105) which will take you straight into the grounds and gardens of Mount Edgecombe. In summer you can walk along the edge of the Plymouth Sound to Cawsand (the forgotten bit of Cornwall) and get the Cawsand passenger ferry back. Check times and frequency with the ferry man Scott on 07833 936863. In the summer a water taxi also runs in the river Yealm. Take a picnic to Cellars Beach or just hitch a lift to the "other side". Call Bill Gregor on 01752 880079 or 07817 132757 to arrange times and check availability.

Sailing - Summer only. Newton Ferrers is just over a mile away and is a great place to mess around in a boat. It's a popular sailing centre and there is usually plenty going on over the summer including racing, fetes and regattas. Boat hire is available from Phil Carter on 01752 872189 (evenings). You can also sail at Salcombe - The Island Cruising Club (tel. 01548 531176) or Salcombe Dinghy Sailing (call the Salcombe Information Office on 01548 843927 to book). Alternatively hire boats and canoes in Plymouth from the Mount Batten Watersports Centre (tel. 01752 404567).

Riding - We don't have any riding facilities on the farm but there are local schools nearby. Try Newton Ferrers' Equestrian Centre, Newton Downs on (tel. 01752 872807) or for rides on Dartmoor try Shilstone Rocks Riding Centre, Widecombe on the Moor (tel. 01364 621281) is reputed to be excellent. If you want to bring your horse away with you we can, by prior arrangement, organise a paddock for you during your stay and we are very happy for you to ride over the farm.

Golf and Tennis - Bigbury Golf Course is nearby and beautiful. Call 01548 810207 to check that there is no competition on when you want to play. There are also other courses at Thurleston (tel. 01548 560405), Wrangaton (tel. 01364 73229), Dartmouth (tel. 01803 712650) and most famously at St Mellion (tel. 01579 351351) which is just over the Tamar Bridge in Cornwall. Tennis is available on hard courts in Noss Mayo on an ad hoc basis. If you're more serious there are indoor courts about 8 miles away at Ivybridge (tel. 01752 893700).

The local TICs are usually very helpful and they have lots of information on their websites. For Plymouth look at www.visitplymouth.co.uk (tel. 01752 266030), or for Ivybridge & South Dartmoor look at their website or call on tel. 01752 897035.
