The closest villages are Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo and Holbeton. Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers are about two miles away, nestled on each side of the River Yealm where the boats float lazily on the water, sheltered by high wooded hillsides: charming villages with old fishermen's cottages and creekside pubs that serve good food (and welcome children and dogs). There is a Co-Op and a post office in Newton Ferrers.

This area is very popular for sailing, especially dinghies. Lovely, too, for walking, with paths that wind through the oak woods revealing breathtaking views at every turn.

It is a similar distance to Holbeton, which has two good pubs, a shop & a post office (open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and weekend mornings).

The nearest large sandy beach is at Mothecombe, about 2 miles away, the historic city of Plymouth is only 11 miles and the A38 trunk road, about 7 miles.
